Many Westerners are put off by the word "meditation" and have visions of Indian swamis or gurus floating in the air and chanting demonic phrases...and this notion has been popularized by modern movies. Though some in the East do practice meditation in order to develop extraordinary mental and physical powers, the vast majority use it simply as a way to slow down, relax and get back in touch with themselves. A student and practitioner of meditation myself now for over 20 years, the core of my practice is returning to the present moment, paying attention to my breathing, and allowing physical and mental tension to simply melt away.
What's very important to understand is that practicing meditation is NOT the same thing as practicing a religion...and though various meditation practices are certainly influenced by the culture that created them, they are not worship in many cases and do not contradict Western religions, such as Christianity. In fact, there is actually a form of Christian meditation--albeit not so well known--that has been around for many centuries, called contemplative or centering prayer. There are also forms of moving meditation, such as tai chi and yoga and walking meditation, which are more appropriate when the levels of mental and/or physical tension are very high...and can also be used to prepare for more stationary types of meditation, such as sitting, standing, or lying down. I have experience with all of these. If you are interested in learning simple, powerful tools to help your mind and body have a better relationship with each other, relieve tension and stress, become more focused, and even heal gently from old wounds, please let me know that learning meditation is important to you and that you want it to be a part of the time we share together.
