This video is an introduction to the EFT version of tapping, led by Julie Schiffman, who has created many helpful guided videos on various themes that might be disturbing to you; this one focuses on anxiety.

Tapping is a common name given to one of two primary techniques, the most popular being Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), the other being Thought Field Therapy (TFT). These therapies are both simple, safe, easy to learn, and can be practiced and used by clients independently outside of their counseling sessions to manage their emotional, mental, and physical distress. They are especially useful for safely and effectively resolving trauma and have been used effectively in world-wide disaster relief with victims of catastrophic weather events, genocide, and more. They can also be used effectively to remove blocks to moving forward on realizing potential and actualizing goals and dreams. Much research on both of these powerful therapies has demonstrated their effectiveness in these contexts. I am a TFT certified practitioner and use both therapies frequently in my work with clients.

What is TFT tapping? TFT was the original form of tapping, invented by the late clinical psychologist Dr. Roger Callahan in the 1980s. He had studied phobias for many years in his practice and found almost miraculous success "curing" a patient (and then many more) from phobia by using a technique he developed from applied kinesiology, based on Chinese acupuncture theory, involving tapping on various acupoints on the head, torso, and hands, with certain sequences corresponding to specific issues (phobia, general anxiety, anger, guilt, shame, trauma, etc.). Dr. Callahan's system was primarily non-verbal, involved diagnosis by the therapist, and was designed to remove the emotional, mental, or physical agitation of the patient ideally in one specific algorithm if possible. The protocol involves performing a specific tapping sequence on the head, torso, and hands linked to a specific issue or condition, followed by a middle bridging technique called the 9 Gamut Sequence (using eye movement technology similar to EMDR), followed by a repetition of the initial specific sequence, following by a closing technique. Dr. Callahan's work is carried on by his wife Joanne, in her retreat center in Virginia.
What is EFT tapping? One of Dr. Callahan's students, Gary Craig, was a trained NLP (neurolinguistic programming) practitioner but not a licensed clinician, and he created his own ultimately more popular spin-off of TFT in the late 1990s, which he named EFT. Gary emphasized the power of verbal affirmations, verbally stating and repeating the offending thought, emotion, or physical sensation, while simultaneously tapping on a general sequence of acupoints, moving from the head down to the torso, repeating the process until the level of distress was reduced to low or none. In this version of tapping, sequences are not specific to different diagnoses.

Watch the following introductory videos on EFT and TFT. The EFT video is by the founder Gary Craig, demonstrating the technique using a pain relief example. The TFT video is by Dr. Franzi Ng, where she demonstrates a powerful therapeutic sequence for generalized stress and anxiety.
